Substitute fonts

You can use PANOSE font matching to access a list of fonts that can be used as substitutes for fonts used in a document but not found on your computer. When you open a file containing uninstalled fonts that can be found in online libraries, you can choose to automatically substitute a missing font with a remote font.

You can set options for font matching. You can use font matching in text only or in both text and text styles. You can also turn off font matching. When you substitute fonts without PANOSE font matching, you can accept the default substitute font, or you can choose any available font as a substitute.

You can apply the substitution temporarily or permanently.

You can build a list of exceptions to font substitutions. Exceptions override the font substitutions recommended by the PANOSE font-matching feature. A list of exceptions can be useful when you share drawings and documents across platforms, because sometimes the same font is spelled differently on each platform.

You can choose how the application handles documents that use different installed font versions. Minor version changes can be substituted automatically to minimize interruptions, while significant differences will require confirmation.

Always ask for font version substitutions — always ask before substituting fonts with different versions. The application will prompt you whenever a document contains a font version different from what’s installed.
Do not ask for minor font version substitutions — ask only before substituting fonts with major version differences. Automatic substitution will occur for minor version changes; you’ll be prompted only for significant differences.
Never ask for font version substitutions — never ask before substituting fonts with different versions. All font version differences will be substituted automatically without prompting.
